Top Reasons for Why You Should Wear Sunscreen and How to Incorporate it Into Your Skincare Routine

There’s nothing better than enjoying a sunny day and soaking up some sun to refresh and absorb some Vitamin D. As we approach the summer months, most of us know the importance of wearing sunscreen to avoid sunburn and damage but what about daily even when it’s cloudy, when we’re indoors, or if we want a nice tan?

The short answer is, wear it year round! The bad news is that it doesn’t matter what season it is or what the weather is like because those harmful UV rays are abundant and always there. In general, it’s best to always wear sunscreen, no matter your age, skin color, or tone. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun’s rays pass through the clouds. Wearing it on a daily basis is an important preventative health and skin care regimen to develop because sun exposure is the number 1 cause of premature aging skin and easily preventable!

With that said, here are the TOP reasons why applying sunscreen should be a daily habit year round:

It Protects Your Skin from UV Rays: Our risk to sun damage from harmful UV rays increases every year as the ozone layer in our atmosphere slowly depletes. Meaning, the UV rays from the sun pass through our atmosphere more easily down to our skin. But, sunscreen blocks these rays reducing the likelihood of sunburn.

It Lowers Your Skin Cancer Risk: Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. By applying sunscreen daily, you cut your risk of contracting skin cancer in HALF!

It Prevents Premature Skin Aging: Sun damage from UV rays can cause our skin to develop an unwanted thick leathery appearance with a breakdown in collagen, which contributes to lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

It Helps Maintain an Even Skin Tone: We often hear that some people don’t want to wear sunscreen so they can get some color and glow from the sun but this is really counterproductive. Sunscreen not only prevents discoloration and dark spots but also helps maintain a more even and smoother skin tone. Avoiding sunscreen, especially on a sunny day, is the start of a bad habit and the OPPOSITE of what dermatologists advise us to do!

Overall, the small repeated accumulation of sun damage over the years can grow into big issues but we’re here to help and show how easy it is to incorporate into your daily skincare routine! First off, did you know that there are different types of UV rays? Each one is different yet crucial to understanding so that we can take better care of our skin.

UVA rays- penetrates deep into the skin which if unprotected, can cause premature aging like wrinkles, sunspots, and even suppression of the immune system.

UVB rays- Unlike UVA, UVB is responsible for sunburns, superficial skin damage, and plays a key role in the development of skin cancer.

UVC rays- the most harmful however, most of it is absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and cannot not reach our skin.

Because of these various types of UV rays, it’s best to get a broad spectrum sunscreen of 20 SPF or higher every time you step outside. More importantly, you have to apply it correctly! In order for it to be effective, it needs to cover all areas of exposed skin including the ears, neck, nose, and LIPS! Some of our favorite sunscreens for all of the above are:
