Split Ends: They Make Me Furious!

Split Ends: They Make Me Furious!

Have you ever noticed dry, dull, and/or breaking hair ends? Well, the good news is that it is extremely common and everybody is susceptible to them, but the bad news is that it may be preventing you from achieving the hair style you love. I am referring specifically to split ends a.k.a the culprit of frizzy and undesirable hair styles.

Split Ends occur when hair strands fray or splinter causing hair to look frizzy and untamed. Healthy hair strands are easy to spot because they have a natural elastic-like bend throughout the entire hair strand and are typically more friendly to tame without any frizz and naturally provide good shine. Split ends are more likely to occur at your ends because it is the oldest part of your hair. Our hair is typically put through stress on a daily basis and over time, can become more and more vulnerable to a weakened or damaged hair shaft. Typically, hair strands will split at the bottom and create a Y shape OR will split at many different locations on the strand and create an appearance of a tree with branches. Although split ends are part of the normal life cycle of hair and the only remedy is to cut or trim the hair, this is what you can do to prevent split ends and achieve the dream of healthy hair.

Do you want to achieve this Sleek, Silky, and Shiny hair style?

Stay away from these common stressors!

Manipulating or Pulling of the hair: Do you pull your hair back often? or When you brush, are you pulling through too firmly? OUCH, your hair definitely doesn’t like that. Treating our hair with kindness is key and any rough handling of the hair will be felt by you!  Use a fairly wide detangling comb with conditioner in the shower. This will help get rid of any large tangles or knots prior to brushing when you get out of the shower. This 2 step process first uses a wide comb to get the detangling process started and then a detangling hair brush to finish the job.

Heat Tools - Blow dryers and other heat tools such as hot irons is one of the easiest and fastest ways to create split ends. Excessive heat wears down the strength of the hair shaft and although your newer hair growth may be able to withstand its first exposure, consistent use is likely to result in damage and a lengthy recovery. Whenever using heat directly to the hair, you should apply a thermal protectant. This will provide a barrier in between your hair and the hot tool, meanwhile sealing moisture and smoothing the cuticle for a smoother and soft hair style. For fine hair types, avoid silicone based heat protectants as they tend to weigh the hair down. Thicker and coarser hair types tend to be more resilient to damage so for those with ultra-fine or fine hair should stay caution of heat tools or stay in heat ranges around 275 deg. Fahrenheit.

Perms, Lightening (Bleaching), and Hair coloring: Chemical services involve chemicals strong enough to alter the hair strand in order to achieve your desired look —> whether it be to deposit color or relax hair. The damage caused to hair from perms, hair coloring or bleach can range from split ends to complete breakage of the hair. Protein based and deep moisturizing treatments are recommended in these cases and consistent use is likely needed.

In all, it is common to see split ends in your hair, but rather than focusing on remedies after they occur, you should be focusing on prevention. We recommend hair cuts or trims to our customers who are experiencing a lot of split ends or damage because it is an effective and easy way to get rid of any dead ends and also potentially prevent causing any further damage. For example, it is almost an instinctual reaction to start playing with and picking at split ends, which often times makes it worse. We don’t blame you, but keep in mind that it’s a habit that will continue to haunt you when trying to achieve the beautiful, sleek and silky hair style.

A full list of our favorite and most recommended products to combat split ends and damage or to repair already damaged hair is below.
